School will always be the reason that I never post on time! Last weekend, I had the opportunity to go to the New York Coffee Festival with a group of friends and it was super fun. We had a chance to learn about different types of roasts, beans, and even upcycled products made of coffee. Take a peak at some of my favorite shots below:
- How would you describe your style? – I would describe my style as very authentically “me”. I wouldn’t say I fit into one category. I love dressing up and I love having fun picking out my outfits and trying new things. Really, I just go with what I like and feel comfortable in, I don’t pay much attention to other’s opinions when it comes to my clothes. Clothes bring me a lot of happiness, and really my style goal is just to wear things that make me feel the most like my best self.
- What are your favorite brands? – My favorite brands currently are Abercrombie, J. Crew, and Express though I get most of my professional clothes from Calvin Klein. As far as shoes go, I love Steve Madden. Also, I’m kind of obsessed with Old Navy for basic things like t-shirts and tanks; they always have really good sales!
- Do you have any style tips you want to share? -Fashion and style are so subjective, but be yourself, love what you’re wearing, and do so with confidence. Also, details matter, little accessories can really make all the difference. Oh! And LIPSTICK!
- What has been your biggest style mistake? – The biggest style mistake I’ve made (and still currently make) is wearing ridiculously uncomfortable shoes because I really like the way they look. I’m obsessed with shoes and have more pairs than I’d like to admit, but my feet are not super thrilled with most of my choices. With all the blisters I constantly have, it’s safe to say a career as a foot model is definitely not in the cards for me.

A talk with my younger brother Christian, on style and his never-ending love for skinny jeans:
- How would you describe your style? – I would describe my style as an oxymoron: meticulously effortless. Nursing school keeps me pretty busy, but over the years I’ve carefully curated a versatile wardrobe that centers around a common color palette. This makes putting together outfits very easy, since pretty much everything in my closet matches. I often stick to solid colors, but I also like to mix a couple of trendier pieces from time to time to offer up a nice contrast in my outfits. I also listen to a handful of Korean artists, and I take a lot of inspiration from their clean and chic styles as well.
- What are your favorite brands? – Uniqlo has to be my go-to brand. It’s really the best brand that caters to an Asian person’s build and height, and the free alteration service that’s included in your purchase really can’t be beat. For more trendy looks, I usually go for Zara and TopMan. More recently, I’ve jumped on the athleisure trend, so I’ve been building up a small collection of pieces from lululemon and Adidas.
- Do you have any style tips you want to share? – I have two style tips to share. Number one: don’t neglect the little things. Elements of an outfit like a fresh cut, tie clips and pocket squares, or patterned socks can add a certain “wow” factor to an outfit without being gaudy. And number two: dress with confidence. If you’re trying out a new style or type of clothing, you really have to commit to wearing it and owning it. I’ve pulled off a number of looks over the years simply because of confidence. So remember your basic style principles, but don’t be afraid to break the rules once and a while.
- What has been your biggest style mistake? – My biggest style mistake has to be the entirety of my freshman year of high school. I went through a huge pop-punk and alternative music phase in high school, and pretty much wore whatever my favorite bands would. Too much neon, too many contrasting patterns. However, my unwavering loyalty to skinny jeans was born during this era of my life, so I guess it wasn’t all that bad.

Before we start anything, I want you all to know that I’m not exactly what you would call a baker. I love to cook, but baking is a skill that I’m convinced I will never master. It’s very precise and I’m not; I love to improvise and taste along the way. However, I will share my attempt at baking with you all.
Directions with my commentary
- Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 350°F. Butter the bottom and sides of 1 (9- by 5- by 3-inch) loaf pan and dust with flour.
- *gets flour everywhere*
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Uhh, I only have 1/2 and 1/4 cup measuring cups and 1 and 1/2 teaspoons. I also doubled the recipe. This should be interesting.
- In a medium bowl, combine the banana, sour cream, and vanilla and stir to combine.
- Ok, simple enough.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the butter and sugar and beat on medium until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the egg and beat on medium until completely incorporated, about 1 minute. Add the banana mixture and beat for about 30 seconds. Add the flour mixture in 2 batches, and stir on low until just incorporated, about 30 seconds total. Add the nuts or chocolate chips, if desired, and use a rubber spatula to fold them into the batter.
- So at first it’s going to look like the flour will never incorporate itself into the batter, but just be patient. I sifted the flour as well to reduce the clumps. Be sure to fold the batter in a clockwise manner, scooping under the mound to make sure there are no streaks of flour left.
- I also toasted walnuts before this step, it was a great addition.
- Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center of the loaf emerges clean and when you press gently in the center of the loaf, it springs back without leaving an impression, 45 to 50 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to let cool for 10 to 15 minutes then gently tap the pan on the countertop to help release the loaf. Place a second rack or a large plate on top of the loaf, invert, and then carefully remove the pan. Use the original rack to invert the loaf again so that it’s right side up then let cool completely before cutting and serving.
- To be honest this was too many directions and I was in the gym for most of this time and trusted one of my roommates to take it out of the oven when he thought it was ready. Then I came home and turned it upside-down in my hand then put it on a plate. It was fine.
- Barely waited to cut into it because I was starving.
- Banana bread is better the next day.
Final thoughts: 10/10, would make again, was equally as delicious as banana bread french toast!
By now, first year medical students should be a week or so into their curriculum and are starting to get their toes wet. My school, like most, dedicates the first half of M1 year toward laying a foundation in biomedical sciences through a course called Fundamentals. It was broken down into four mini-blocks, each with its own theme and exam.
- Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Genetics
- Cell Biology and Metabolism
- Pharmacology and the Autonomic Nervous System
- Immunology and Microbiology
Instead of telling you which pathways to study, I’m going to provide you with what I think is important to take out of what feels like taking all of your upper level bio electives in one semester.
- Invest in a whiteboard – Most of the biomedical sciences portion of med school is a rehash of your *favorite* undergraduate nightmares with added depth. One thing that worked for me was investing in a whiteboard with ultra fine tip markers (you’ll thank me when you get them, they save so much space). Unfortunately, much of this module is continuous repetition of biochemical pathways. There’s no getting around it, so get cracking!
- Focus on implications – An important caveat to my above point is that there is a reason that you’re learning all of this, and it’s not to drive yourself crazy memorizing these pathways. Defects in gene expression can have a whole host of downstream effects. The point of drawing out pathways is to visualize how enzyme or protein deficiencies lead to disease, such as phenylketonuria (PKU). Additionally, it’s important to know enzymes that can become drug targets in the treatment of disease, such as xanthine oxidase in the treatment of gout.
- Everyone is smart – This might be the first time you have felt challenged, and I mean really challenged. Realize that you are surrounded by people who were at the top of their class at top schools. Some of your classmates may have done research on some esoteric gene mutation or have a ton of clinical experience from scribing or from being an EMT. Despite all of this, don’t forget that you too were accepted for a reason; focus on learning the material and becoming a physician instead of how well someone else may seem to be doing compared to you.
- Ask for help – Don’t be afraid to reach out for assistance, whether it’s through tutoring or forming study groups with your classmates. I start tutoring my first set of students tomorrow, and I’m getting tutored as well for cardio. I like to take the initiative and preemptively meet with my tutor at the beginning of each block to see how to best tackle the material. Blogs like mine may help you discover study strategies, but they are not as personalized as the students who have come before you. They know what material professors like to test and which textbooks will be the most helpful. They don’t bite, and they’re (usually) free through your school. Take advantage of it!

With my first year under my belt, I’ve found myself in a weird situation: people are actually asking me for advice about med school (I can’t believe I started a year ago). I decided to start this series based on my own journey, since I was always fortunate enough to have mentors tell me about how best to prepare for an exam, or what to watch out for in a class with a reputation for being difficult. It’s only fair that I share some of the things that I believe led to my success this year.
As the year progresses, I’ll be posting guides specifically for each block and how to go from White Coat Woes to White Coat Wows (ba-dum-tch). The posts will be based on my school’s block schedule, so it will most likely vary for your school. Disclaimer: most of the study tips and tricks are applicable to different blocks and I will try to be as specific as possible regarding study strategies, but you should to find your own style and figure out what works for you. Additionally, I’m planning to post some guides for pre-med students as well. Many of my friends from high school and college are in various stages of their medical careers (from premed to med school to residency), so I’ll try to include their perspective whenever possible. The first post, however, is for those who are starting right now.
- How much should I study? – This is entirely dependent on you, but no matter how smart you are or how little you studied in college, med school is exactly like the old adage “like drinking out of a fire hose.” Ask Peter Griffin. If you have poor study habits, fix them. If you have great study habits, make them better. Like fellow med school blogger Mary Ella Wood states, “medical school is like having to eat 10 pancakes a day. If you eat 10 a day, it is manageable. However, if you skip a day and have to eat 20 pancakes the next day, it starts to get difficult.” Procrastinating will catch up to you; believe me, I am a serial procrastinator and I have to actively try to keep up. Study a few hours each day and it will be a piece of (pan)cake. If I can do it, you can do it.
- Do you still have a social life? – Contrary to popular belief, med students are allowed to have fun. Yes, it will be truncated significantly, but there is still time for hobbies and things that make you happy. If you treat school like a full-time job and actively pay attention for the hours that you are in school, you won’t need to play catch up at home. Some people, myself included, take advantage of our lecture recordings and study at home at our convenience. Just make time for your mental health and well-being, too!
- How do you find time for yourself? – Serial procrastinator and over-committer that I am, I thrive on checklists and Google Calendar. One app that I could not live without is Wunderlist, a checklist app that helps me keep track of everything. Both my day-to-day goals and long-term goals go in here, everything from grocery lists to errands to study topics. I get a little dopamine rush from checking things off, so find what works for you.
- What is a typical week like? – Depending if it’s M-W-F or T-Th, the day usually starts with mandatories like our case-based small learning groups (former) or our doctoring class (latter). Those are followed our main block lecture, our biostats/critical appraisal course, or service learning time. Afternoons are spent in “lab” sessions which can either be a second lecture, a practical session/team-based learning assessment, or time in the anatomy lab for dissections. From 3pm onward, you have free rein, more or less. Once a week I’m either in student clinic seeing a patient or at a satellite rotation at an outpatient affiliate. Other afternoons, I might be at a service learning site. The other time that’s blocked off is “self-directed learning” which you can use for studying *ahem* or for completing other tasks. I confess to using it for gym time, cooking, and the occasional Netflix, but as long as you stay on top of studying, it’s a nice time cushion to have.
- What did you find was the hardest thing to adjust to? – The rigor of med school is no joke, and even for someone with good coping mechanisms, the stress can sneak up on you. For those who are entering straight out of undergrad or who are coming back from the workforce, adjusting to the pace can be difficult. Most med schools offer student support services like peer tutoring or counseling, for free or at a low cost. If you feel like you need these services, use them. You don’t need to be a hero. Outside of that, find time to enjoy yourself and do things that make you happy. Sometimes, that means taking the afternoon off to call your parents or friends, or go for a run, or watching a few episodes of your favorite series. Here’s an article from the AAMC about stress and suicide in medical education. It’s only going to get more stressful from here, so please make sure you’re taking care of yourself.
- What other advice do you have for a new med student? –
- Stick to a budget. Don’t buy useless crap. Ice cream is ok.
- Stay in your lane. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. There is no golden bullet for med school!
- On top of academics, try to learn something new every day/practice a skill every day. Like, you should really learn to cook.
I don’t know if this is sending mixed messages, but don’t stress too much. You made it this far and you should celebrate your accomplishments. Just be sure to self-monitor and ask for help when you need it. Best of luck to the incoming class, welcome to med school!

With the first year of medical school under my belt, I’ve received the expected types of questions from family and friends: “Are you happy where you are?”, “Did you like it?”, “Was it what you expected?”, and “Will you take a look at this?” The answer to all of the above being “yes”, “yes”, “yes”, and “please see an actual medical professional.” My favorite question, however, is “what was your favorite class?”
The Art of Observation
It is often said that medicine is both an art and a science, a statement that took on a deeper significance during my selective, the Art of Observation. This course offered a chance to explore the oft-overlooked humanities component of our medical education by focusing on the critical appraisal of artistic work and examining the collaborative and intertwined history of both art and medicine.
Our first exercise was to do something most medical students are reluctant to do: tell everyone why he or she has the right answer in front of the doctor. After being shown different paintings of various scenes, we were asked to interpret what was shown to us – the time of day, period of history, mood of the scene, etc. We were then asked why we thought what we thought, forced to defend our hypotheses with visual evidence in the work – shadows cast by the sun, the fashion of the dresses worn, the expressions on people’s faces, so on and so forth. Further still, we were asked to objectively examine what led us to our conclusions based on fact alone. We supposed that the scene was taking place in the morning because of sunlight breaking through a window. But what else is sunlight other than a decrease in the value of colors over a certain area? Is a window not four rectangles circumscribed by a larger rectangle? And do we know it is made of glass because colors and shapes can be seen within the rectangle that are different from the colors and shapes outside the rectangle?
Our second exercise focused on visuospatial assessments and interpretation of 3D images. Chop a sphere in half and what do you get? A circle of course. And a cube? Obviously, a square. What about a cone? Depending on the angle of the bisecting plane a circle, ellipse, and triangle could be the right answer. Maybe I should have paid more attention in geometry and calculus. You utilize these skills to interpret an MRI or mentally reconstruct a 3D image (or even physically reconstruct a 3D image) based on 2D data. It’s also an important skill in understanding the 2D limitations of tests like radiography. This exercise was followed-up with a charcoal drawing studio session with a nude model and more painting analyses in the gallery. During this class, we practiced bringing our observations and interpretations to life. After being told to draw and erase a few times and meditating on the idea that nothing is permanent, I put together a piece of work that I’m actually very proud of (as a beginner of course).
Medicine, like art, requires us to sift through sand to find gold. A skill learned in this course, such as tolerance for ambiguity, is important because the right answer is rarely ever as obvious as we would like it to be. Often times, we are forced to with sort through mountains of ambiguous information in search of patterns that lead us to the correct diagnosis or treatment. One might even say that tolerance for ambiguity allows us to appreciate and validate different perspectives, a skill that is useful when consulting your colleagues or trying to have a conversation with a patient about his or her fears or goals. It is useful for us to tolerate ambiguity and uncertainty as a step in the learning process, instead of perceiving it as a threat or an obstacle. Other skills learned in this course, such as spatial awareness, might even be useful for assessing facial expressions and body language in your patients and colleagues, a necessary facet of emotional intelligence.
Another challenge, as Sir Osler stated, is “record[ing] an observation in brief and plain language.” Trying to explain a disease process to a layperson is like trying to explain to someone what their reflection is if they’ve never seen a mirror before. It’s an exercise that one can easily write off as trivial because we know what a mirror is from previous experience. But when you’re explaining to a patient why you think a their proximal muscle weakness is polymyositis versus a limb girdle muscular dystrophy for example, your own previous experience is going to mean little to them if you can’t explain why using simple terms to parse difficult concepts into digestible information.
This course really was my favorite class, but it was something that I didn’t fully appreciate until we finished our musculoskeletal-dermatology-rheumatology block. “Having a patient walk can tell you a lot about what’s wrong with them”, “a rash isn’t just a rash”, and “we don’t really know what’s going on here” are a few of the important points I picked up. A few weeks ago, I spent a Saturday at the MoMA, excited that I knew why Paul Klee’s painting style differed from one painting to another (it was systemic sclerosis, of course). Do me a favor the next time you’re at a museum: tilt your head or crouch down on the floor. There could be a whole world in front of you that you never even knew existed, if you only look a little harder.

- The proportions of the body are off. The head is off-center to the right and looks propped up or devoid of a neck. It also looks a little larger than what would be expected for the body. The right arm is shorter than the left and does not reach past his hip. These inconsistencies may be due to multiple iterations of the painting using various cadavers with varying proportions. - One of the Graces might have arthritis. The leftmost figure displays a Boutonnière deformity on the fingers of her right hand (the distal interphalangeal joints are flexed while the proximal interphalangeal joints are extended).
The Ugly Duchess, Massys
- The Duchess may have had Paget’s disease, a disorder of bone deposition in which unchecked osteoclast activity leads to accelerated and disorganized deposition of lamellar bone.
The Death of Procris (A Satyr mourning over a Nymph), di Cosimo
- The adducted, medially rotated, extended arm and pronated forearm would lead me to believe that the nymph developed a condition called Erb’s palsy/waiter’s tip due to a lesion of her C5-C6 nerve roots (which makes sense given the location of her injury – the cricoid cartilage). One might also look at lacerations on her forearm and posit that they were sustained while defending herself against the satyr (who are known in mythology for their voracious sexual appetites). I don’t know, I’m not a forensic pathologist.
